Immigration is a political hot-button in the upcoming US Presidential election - and while this is primarily illegal immigration that upsets so many, legal immigration is in the news as thousands of Syrians and others flee war zones in search of a safe home. This brings up the question of how do immigrants assimilate into their new society, especially the US society?  There are many myths and assumptions about this process of becoming an American, so a study that breaks down what happens as the first, second, and third generations come to fit in and become citizens. Single mothers much more likely to live in poverty than single fathers

Anyone who has raised children knows how expensive and how time-intensive it is.  Add to this the wage disparity between men and women, and it's easy to understand how so many single mothers - and their children - live in poverty. So this study merely restates the obvious, something that most of us know but may not understand.   Confirming the situation so many Americans find themselves in is a small step in finding solutions, not for the mothers as much as for the children who through no fault of their own live in poor housing eating a poor diet and growing up to a situation where opportunity is harder to find and exploit. Having grown up in a single parent household due to the long-term illness of my father, I know the social costs these children face.  How much of a struggle finishing school and staying out of trouble can be.  How socially marginalizing poverty is, and how hard it can be to overcome the negative self-image poverty leaves on a growing child....
