Salinger ~ A New Biography

If you haven't heard, there's a new biography out on J.D. Salinger, my generation's anti-anti-hero and author of an ultimate-coming-of-age book, Catcher in the Rye.  J.D. Salinger is reported to have deeply regretted publishing it, yet still spent the money the sales of 65 million copies generated.

According to a review in The Economist, this biography is, "Full of color and intrigue, “Salinger” can be gripping. It is also exactly the kind of messy, unsubtle, intrusive and speculative work the man himself understandably shunned."

Poor Mental Health, Casual Sex Reinforce Each Other

Self-loathing and disgust are all too often the result of a one night stand - for both men and women. Now study suggests that poor mental health and casual sex actually feed off each other in teens and young adults, with each one contributing to the other over time. Researchers found that teens who showed depressive symptoms were more likely than others to engage in casual sex as young adults. In addition, those who engaged in casual sex were more likely to later seriously consider suicide. “Several studies have found a link between poor mental health and casual sex, but the nature of that association has been unclear,” said Sara Sandberg-Thoma, lead author of the study at The Ohio State University. “There’s always been a question about which one is the cause and which is the effect. On Being Humble: E.B. White was Right in Charlotte's Web

It seems the best authors have a knack for accurately describing the personality traits of their characters.  For example, the character change experienced by Ebenezer Scrooge in Dickens A Christmas Carol is considered by research psychologists to be spot on for how the process of change works. How true to life was Scrooge's change? Is this ability to describe a character strictly from watching others?  Business writer Peter Drucker says in his semi-autobiographical book, Adventures of a Bystander that he and many of the other writers he knows are essentially bystanders, observing what is going on around them.
