Salinger ~ A New Biography

If you haven't heard, there's a new biography out on J.D. Salinger, my generation's anti-anti-hero and author of an ultimate-coming-of-age book, Catcher in the Rye.  J.D. Salinger is reported to have deeply regretted publishing it, yet still spent the money the sales of 65 million copies generated.

According to a review in The Economist, this biography is, "Full of color and intrigue, “Salinger” can be gripping. It is also exactly the kind of messy, unsubtle, intrusive and speculative work the man himself understandably shunned."

Possible early Viking settlement in North America explored

www.dailymail.co.uk    The new Viking settlement was found on the edge of Point Rosee in Newfoundland (illustrated above) 400 miles south of another site at L'Anse aux Meadows. They suggest that the Vikings' mastery of the seas allowed them to venture to North America.    There is so much speculation on possible discoverers of the Americas ranging from Polynesians, Japanese and Chinese to French Merovingians to a lost tribe of Israel, ancient Egyptians and sailors from the lost continent of Atlantis.  There are two statements that need to be said about this: An extended family group first crossed from Siberia to North America some 14,000 years ago, and survived, built sophisticated cultures and societies, and left undeniable evidence of their presence.  To give credit where credit is due, they discovered the Americas and no one else. Developing the Socially Anxious Character

It's common in fiction for an author or screenwriter to develop a character that finds making friends difficult, whether it’s a protagonist or part of a supporting cast. Developing a character suffering social anxiety, the most common type of anxiety, is your opportunity to create a story that most readers and audiences connect to readily: showing someone growing and changing through the events and interactions in your story.  At the same time, you're creating a character any skilled actor would love to play. Men perceive women in red as more sexually receptive. Do women as well?

The dress color was red or white. As I've written in earlier posts, I've been a man for most of my life, as least since the age of 25 or so.  I'd never heard of this "wearing red is a sexual signal" thing.  Really?  Well.  Hmmm. How much blood could Dracula drink before killing you?

Dracula (1931), directed by Tod Browning starring Bela Lugosi, Helen Chandler,  and David Manners, story by Bram Stoker, adapted for the screen from the Garrett  Fort stage play by Hamilton Deane & John L. Balderston. A joy of reading science releases is coming across apparently meaningless research that explains things we never knew we need, but do. Such as how much blood could Dracula suck out of someone's neck without killing them?  And, of course, how long would it take? I never knew that I need this information, but here it is.
